Quick summary: Thai police have arrested an Australian national at Bangkok airport following the discovery of a missing seventeen year old girl’s body concealed in a suitcase near Pattaya. Security camera footage allegedly tracked the suspect transporting the victim to his condominium and subsequently moving the suitcase on a motorcycle, though he denies the murder and concealment charges despite physical evidence of a struggle. For international public policy and regional healthcare practice, this tragic case underscores the critical need for more robust safety frameworks and proactive protection systems for vulnerable minors operating within tourist heavy nightlife sectors to prevent exploitation and safeguard well-being.
Thai police have arrested an Australian man at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport after the body of a 17-year-old girl was discovered stuffed inside a suitcase.
The suspect, identified as Simon Carman, aged 45 or 46, from Ballarat, Victoria, was taken into custody on Friday evening after authorities intercepted him allegedly attempting to purchase a ticket to flee to Perth.
The victim, identified as Tunchanok Donhomla, was found at 11 pm on Friday (26th Jun). Her naked body was inside a large black suitcase left alongside a railway track behind the Pattaya Floating Market, approximately a 10-minute drive from where Mr Carman had been staying. Her face bore signs of severe assault, with extensive swelling, bruising, and blood flowing from her mouth and nose. Her friends had reported her missing at 5 pm that afternoon after failing to hear from her, sparking a swift homicide inquiry.
Investigators reconstructed the final hours of the victim’s life using security camera footage. Police allege Mr Carman picked up Ms Donhomla from the Beach Road vice strip in Pattaya in the early hours of (25th Jun) Thursday morning. CCTV captured the two entering a condominium together, and she was never seen leaving the building alive.
Footage from 9:34pm on Thursday allegedly showed Mr Carman emerging alone, pulling a large black suitcase matching the one in which the body was later found. He was recorded transporting it strapped to the back of a motorcycle along the railway tracks, disappearing from camera view for nine minutes before returning to his hotel.
Mr Carman was arrested at the airport two hours after the missing person report was filed and was driven back to Pattaya, located over 100 km south of Bangkok. Police Colonel Anek Sarathongyu, Superintendent of the Pattaya City Police Station, confirmed he has been charged with murder, taking a minor for indecent purposes, and burying, concealing, moving, or destroying a body to conceal the death or cause of death.
“We believe he killed her, and he is being questioned on suspicion of murder,” Police Colonel Sarathongyu said. “He has fingernail scratches across his body that are consistent with a struggle, but he denies killing her.”
When asked about visible scratches on his neck, Mr Carman claimed they were not from a struggle. “I think it’s a spider; they always get in here,” he said.
Mr Carman has told police the teenager disappeared from the hotel room while he was asleep. Lieutenant Colonel Kanoknun Sooksri, the investigator in charge of the case, confirmed to the ABC that Mr Carman has denied all charges.
He is currently held at Pattaya Prison while investigators await the results of a post-mortem examination and additional forensic evidence. Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed it is providing consular assistance.
